2nd Lt Howard W. Madsen volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 11 September 1942.

He was sent overseas in November 1943.

The airplane was shot down by enemy fighters. Five crew members survived and evaded capture, five men were killed.

Lt Madsen was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of St. Andre-de-l'Eure, France.

His brother, Paul V. Madsen, was killed in action in Belgium on 27 December 1944 and is buried at Mount Zion Cemetery in Collingdale, Penssylvania.
