S/Sgt Edward C. Mescher attended Lewis and Clark High School for three years.

He joined the Regular Army in Fort Lewis, Washington on 4 October 1941.

Soon after bombs away, the airplane was attacked by more than 20 fighters. Engines #2 and "3 were hit and belch smoke, the communications system was out. The tip of the left wing was destroyed, the vertical stabilizer pierced, the oxygen supply system was dead and the airplane lost altitude and contact with the formation.

Seven crew members survived and were taken prisoner, one could evade capture Two men were killed.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of St. Andre, France.
