2nd Lt Robert E. Speas graduated from Sterling High School and attended Southwestern College. A tenor, he often sang in operatic productions, church choirs and over the radio.He volunteered for the Air Corps of the U.S. Army in Rochester, New York on 30 March 1942.
The plane was hit by flak, causing severe damage.
Five crew members were killed, five were taken prisoner. German records show that the five killed air men were initially buried at the cemetery of Hoya.
