Cpt Herbert G. Devore worked for the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation as a laboratory technician before he volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 28 March 1942. He was sent overseas in September 1943.

He was married to Betty Ruth Richards on 22 August 1942.

The airplane was hit by flak that set off flares who where on board. Three crew members were taken prisoner, seven were killed and were initially buried at the community cemetery of Ölper.
