The airplane was attacked by enemy fighter. The #1 and #2 engines were knocked out en a wing tip was shot off.According to T/Sgt James Merson, one of the surviving crew members, Lt Page's parachute must have failed to open, based on what he looked like. he had to load his body on a truck after he was captured. Another surviving crew member, T/Sgt Edgar Harbour, believed he was hit by enemy cannon fire when bailing out.
Lt Page was initially buried at the POW cemetery of Achmer air base.
