William Buchanan attended high school for three years and was a metal worker.

He volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 15 January 1942.

The aircraft was shot down by flak over the target. Seven crew members were killed, three men were taken prisoner.
