More information

Lt Charles E. Jennings graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1937 and worked at the VA Carolina Chemical Company before enlisting in the Army Air Corps.

At 1319 hours a/c 502, Lt. C.E. Jennings, 339th Squadron was hit by flak over the target, peeled out of the formation in flames and began to lose altitude. The left wing broke off and the ship blew up near the ground. One parachute was seen. According to a surviving crewmember, Lt Jennings was or instantly killed when the plane exploded or was injured so that he couldn’t bail out and, therefore, was killed when the plane struck the ground.

The picture was taken in high school in 1937.
