Russell C. Ford's B-17, "Lady Jean", from the 96th Bomb Group was seen ditchin in flames over the North Sea at 13:50 hrs. The cause for the fire was unknown. The crew was on their 11th mission and flew the group's first B-17 aircraft equipped with the new Bendix Chin Turret. Nobody of the crew survived.
