He joined the Air Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve in des Moines, iowa on 5 August 1942.

The airplane was attacked by enemy aircraft and exploded.

One crew member survived and was taken prisoner. Nine men were killed. They were initially buried at the community cemetery of Sulze the same day.

He is remembered at the Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry, Iowa.
