Pvt John J. Winkel was a driver before he enlisted in Baltimore, Maryland on 29 January 1944 and went overseas in September. Before he joined the Army he was employed as a clerk. Two of his brothers, George and Charles, were in the Navy, somewhere in the Pacific.He was the father of two sons, Francis, 3 years old and John 5.
