Ian Gray attended Lowrey, Oakman, Maples and Fordson High School and was a metal worker.

He joined the Canadian Army and served until the attack on Pearl Harbor, when he was released and volunteered for the Army of the United States in Detroit, Michigan on 16 September 1942.

According to a newspaper article, Cpl Gray got out of his tank and with the help of another soldier dragged many wounded men on their backs while crowling on their stomach to safety. While returning to his own tank, he stepped on a mine.
