More information
2nd Lt Nicholas J. Weber had been overseas since May 1944, being based in England with the army air Corps. A 1933 graduate of Altoona Catholic High School, Lt Weber entered the army in February, 1942, leaving with a National Guard field artillery unit for Camp Shelby, Miss. Sent to Camp Sutton, N.C. in July, 1942, then Sgt. Weber applied for and obtained admission to the air corps as a flying cadet. He received his first pre-flight training in November, 1942, serving at Nashville, Tenn., Florida and the Deming, N.M. air field where he was awarded his wings and a second lieutenant's commission in December, 1943. Before entering the service Lt. Weber was employed by the Pennsylvania railroad. This group was attacked by approxiately 25 enemy fighters at 10.00 hours, altitude 25,400 feet, east of Eisenach, Germany. During this attack, which lasted 20 or 30 seconds, four of our aircraft were seen to have been shot down. As this was the only fighter attack made on the group it is presumed by this headquarters that subject aircraft was also lost at this time.
