1st Lt Joseph E. Slattery Jr. graduated from St. John's High School. He attended Louisiana State University and graduated from Centenary College. He was employed at Southwestern Gas & Electric Company.
He joined the Air Corps of the Regular Army at Fort Sam Houston, Texas on 13 July 1941.

A/C 42-29998 was shot down by enemy aircraft. Of the 10 men crew only 2 survived and were taken prisoner.

The picture was taken in college in 1937.
