More information

S/Sgt Richard J. Allee graduated from Central High School and was employed by the Ball-Band plant.

He volunteered for the Air Corps of the U.S. Army at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana on 23 June 1942 and was sent overseas in March 1943.

The airplane was attacked by enemy aircraft and crashlanded. Prior to the landing, three men had already bailed out. Six men were in the airplane when it hit the ground. Five of them were taken to a POW camp, one was taken to hospital. Only S/Sgt Allee was killed and his body was in the plane. According to the witness statement of a German civilian, the next day an ambulance arrived at the scene of the crash and the body of S/Sgt Allee was taken out by two men.

He was first buried by the Germans at the cemetery of Wesermunde on 28 July 1943. Oddly, his grave was markes with a cross with the inscription: 1214350, Sgr Allen V. RAF K/A 28/7/43.

Later, at an unknown date, he was reburied at the British Military Cemetery of Soltau as an unknown casualty.

His remains were disinterred en transported to Ardennes Cemetery on 9 February 1948 were he could be identified on 11 March 1948. And again disinterred on 3 December 1948.

He was given his final resting place on 14 April 1949.

At the time of his death, his brother James served with the Air Corps in Florida.
