2nd Lt George E. Thompson was serving as the co-pilot on a B-17G which took off from Bury St. Edmunds with an assigned target of Munich, Germany. The aircraft was first hit by flak in the No 1 engine and the a second later another flak hit near the flight deck and the pilot ordered all the crew to bale out. Then there were explosions and the B-17 went down into a spin and blew up. It crashed 220yards SW of Gunzenhausen, about 12 miles north of Munich City Center. 6 KIA 3 POW Three of the KIA were executed on the orders of the Kreisleiter and buried in a bomb crater near the autobahn.

Lt Thompson was officially declared dead one day and one year after he was reportec missing in action.
