Robert Hitzfield graduated from Northwestern University.He volunteered for the Army of the United States on 8 March 1943 at Camp Grant, Illinois. During his boot camp training, the Army learned that he spoke fluent German. He was assign to Officers Training School and sent to a university to enhance his knowledge of the German language and geography of the country for almost one year.
Lt Hitzfield was leading a drive on the east side of the Rhine River at the Remagen Bridge when he was killed by German artillery fire.
