More information

1st Lt Leonard C. McCauley attended high school for 4 years before he joined the Regular Army in Tacoma, Washington on 5 July 1940. He was sent overseas in June 1944.
He was awarded the Silver Star Medal. The citation reads: When three enemy tanks, with infantry riding them, attacked his column, 1st Lt McCauley promptly moved forward and in the face of intense enemy fire, organized and led a platoon of infantry against the enemy. His outstanding courage and fierce aggressiveness forced the enemy to abandon excellent positions and become easy prey for our forces. Although his conspicuous gallantry cost him his life, 1st Lt McCauley was directly responsible for the routing of the enemy with great loss and for saving the lives of many of our men.
