More information

The lead scouts were Robert Tumey and Frank Garrity. At 1530 the first German shot was firedand then they opened up with massive small arms fire from the windows, catching the platoon in an explosed position just outside the town. They were pinned down. Tumey and Garrity were near the first house, and to get there they had to cut through a barbed wire entanglement. Tumey started cutting, then they made a dash for the house. Garrity was hit through the leg and in the stomach, but they made it. They laid in silence so as not to draw additional German fire. Meanwhile Robert Starcevich who was near Smitty decided to trey for a safer spot. As he raised up, an enemy round went through his head no pain just instant death. When darkness finally came all wounded and dead were carried back up the hill except Garrity. When it turned dark. Tumey, who was clutching a hand grenade minus its safety pin, crawled over to were Garrity lay and shook him. The big man was dead.
