Salvatore J. Melomo attended college ans was an actor.

He volunteered fort the Air Corps of the Army of the United States on 8 January 1942 in New York City, New York. He had completed aviation cadet training at Craig Field, Alabama in 1942. He then received flight training at the Army Air Force school at Greeneville, Mississippi.

The airplane was hit by flak and turned back to head for home. It immediateldy feathered one engine and dropped his bombs, losing altitude slowly.
Of the ten men crew, nine were able to bail out before the aircraft crashed. Five of these nine men were taken prisoner, the other four were killed.
Surviving crew member reports indicate that 1st Lt Melomo did bail out, but must have drowned.
