2nd Lt David Barer graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn in 1938, where he served on the Student Council and was part of the First Air Squad. He also attended college for two years before he enlisted at Camp Upton, New York on 14 February 1942.

The airplane was attacked by enemy aircraft near Hildesheim, Germany. The aircraft went into a spin and exploded.

Two men were blown out of the plane by the explosion and survived. The remaining eight crew members were killed. They were initially buried at the community cemetery of Ottbergen, Germany.
