Richard A. Howell attended high school for 2 years. He was employed by an electric company in Ashley, Illinois. He volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri on 15 May 1942.His father who lived in Decatur, Alabama, was an instructor at the Southern Aviation School.
The plane was damaged by flak and fighters.
Richard A. Howell was initially buried with military honors at the cemetery of Vries on 31 August 1943.
Seven crew members were killed, three evaded capture.
