Reed J. Lamb graduated from Pima High School and attended Arizona State College.

He joined the Air Corps of the National Guard at Camp Barkeley, Texas on 7 June 1941 and completed his flight training at the Army Air Force Advanced Flying School in Roswell, New Mexico.

He was married to Marie Carlynn Andersen in November 1942.

The aircraft was attacked by fighters over the target and on the return flight over the North Sea which set it on fire. It crashed north of Borkum Island. Only one crew member could bail out and was rescued by a German minesweeper. The other nine men drowned.

His brother, Nash Larue Lamb, was killed in action in the South Pacific during a kamikaze attack, aboard the USS Gilligan DE-508 on 12 January 1945.
