Joseph A. Kinney graduated from Newton North Hig School in 1934 and was a salesman. He enlisted in Boston, Massachusetts on 16 September 1942. At the time of his enlistment he still had the Canadian nationality.

The plane was damaged by flak and fighters.

He was initially buried with military honors at the cemetery of Vries on 31 August 1943.

Seven crew members were killed, three evaded capture.
