John D. Culler graduated in 1936 from Frederick High School and was bookkeeper.

He joined the National Guard in Frederick, Maryland on 3 February 1941.

The formation was attacked by approximately 200 enemy fighters over the target. Two singled out this airplane. It exploded in mid-air.

Two crew members survived and were taken prisoner, eight men were killed. They were initially buried at the Port Cemetery of Wesermunde on 19 June 1943.
