1st Sgt Robert M. Bateman graduated from Topeka Catholic High School in 1939.He joined the Regular Army on 7 February 1940. He was sent overseas in July 1944.
Bateman's company made an attack that day against German positions in the face of fierce and determined resistance from heavily manned and well dug-in positions. Sgt Bateman was leading his men in the attack when he was caught in a burst of machine gun fire and was instantly killed.
Sgt Bateman was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Grand Failly, France.
