Pvt Gilbert W. Desroches was a filer, grinder, buffer and polisher metal before he enlisted in Springfield, Massachusetts on 12 April 1943.

He died in a field hospital from the effects of artillery shell fragments in his head.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Grand-Failly, France.
