Per S/Sgt Thad E. Blanchard Sr.: "I was ahead of him about five yards. Running out of grenades, I yelled for him to throw one to me. He was crouched by a tree and when looked back I knew he was dead. He had the grenade in his hand just ready to toss it to me. Just as I ran to him, a machine gun opened up, and I grabbed the grenade and slammed it at the position, cussing those Krauts for killing this brave young life."
