S/Sgt Carl W. Cerny graduated from South High School in 1938. He was employed at Heald Machine Co. before he enlisted at Fort Devens, Massachusetts on 10 February 1942. He was sent overseas in January 1944 and arrived in France on 16 July 1944.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Saint James, France.
