Pvt John R. Heffernan attended Arsenal Technical High School.He enlisted at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana on 18 July 1942 and was sent overseas in January 1944.
He was reported wounded in action on 1 August 1944 and after recovering, returned to active duty about a month before he was killed.
He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Saint James, France.
