Louis P. Haviland graduated from Harrison High School in 1941.He volunteered for the the Air Corps of the Army of the United States on 15 December 1941 in New York City in New York.
The plane was attacked by an enemy airplane as it proceeded to the northward of Kiel and it was seen to make a steep dive and hit the water as it passed over the entrance of Kiel Harbor.
Seven crew members survived and were taken prisoner, three men were killed.
