S/Sgt Robert M. Martin graduated from Burrillville High School in 1940. He was born and raised on a farm.

He enlisted in Providence, Rhode Island, on 24 July 1942.

The bomber was shot down by enemy fighters. Eight crew members survived and were taken prisoner; two men were killed.

S/Sgt Martin's parachute was damaged when he bailed out. His remains were found in Herwijnen. The aircraft crashed in a canal in Gorinchem.

His remains were interred at the Rotterdam Crooswijk General Cemetery.
