1st Lt Stafford W. Webb graduated from Greensboro Senior High School in 1936. He was on the staff of the New York Public Library when he enlisted in September 1941. He received his pilot's wings and his commission as a second lieutenant in August 1942. He was promoted to first lieutenant in March 1943. In May 1943, he was sent to England.He was awarded the Air Medal a first time in July 1943 for "exceptionally meritorious achievement" during bombing raids over Europe and an Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a second award in October 1943.
This was his 17th mission.
On leaving the target, the airplane was attacked by a German firgher and exploded in the air.
