S/Sgt Ellis E. Montgomery volunteered for the Army of the United States at Fort Crook, Nebraska on 17 February 1942.

The aircraft was attacked by enemy fighters and was on fire between the #2 engine and the fuselage. It was seen to blow up. The entire crew of nine men was killed. They were initially buried at the cemetery of prisoners of war in Stendal on 3 January 1945.
