1st Lt John C. Campbell attended college before he volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States in Minneapolis, Minnesota on 6 April 1942.

Sgt Robert W. Dirks:
Campbell flying to rear of our ship fighter came in from 6 o’clock low hit 17 in belly. When hit must have hit oxygen. Sheet metal, pulley’s and cables fell out. Belly seemed to blow up. Fighter then leveled off on us. Saw one man go out waist. Watched plane it had started in a slow spin down. Did not watch it hit ground as was concentrated on fighter which attack us.

Maj E. A. Bradunas:
I have heard that Lt Regan tells that they found our boys plane crashed and with seven of the boys bodies still there. That only the three who parachuted out were saved.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Solers, France.

He is remembered in Neuvy-en-Sullias, France.
