More information

A graduate of East high School, 1st Lt Lloyd J. Triche attended the University of Akron. He was formerly employed at the B.F. Goodrich Co.

First pilot on a B-17, Lieutenant Triche was participating in his second European raid on Peenemunde, the city in which the German scientists worked out their V-bombs and also were conducting atomic research, when his plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire. He already had been decorated with the Air Medal and an oak leaf cluster for 18 missions over Germany.

Statement from Charles C. Kanzi, 2nd Lt, Air Corps, Bombardier:
"This A/C was hit by flak then went into flat spin and fell to about ten thousand feet pulling out for a few seconds and then into a tight spin and burning. Several members of crew were seen to bail out. Did not notice whether plane hit ground or not due to evasive action taken after bombs away."
