More information

John B. Rosenthal's father was born in Lithuania and his mother in Poland. They seperately immigrated to the United States in 1905 or 1906 where they met each other.

He enlisted in New York City, New York on 29 November 1940. He departed with his unit for Europe on 3 July 1944. At that time he served with the Anti-Tank Company of his regiment.

He was transferred to A Company on 13 September 1944 and soon promoted to private firts class. He was promoted to sergeant on 13 December 1944.

He was reported lightly wounded in action in his face on 28 February 1945. After the needed care of this wound, he returned to his unit the same day. For this wound he was rewarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time.

A month later John was reported AWOL (absent without leave) for five days for an unknown reason. This is during a period when his regiment is resting, the men and materials are being inventoried and training is being carried out. After returning to his company, he was reported as “sick on duty” on 28 March 1945 and (probably for this reason) demoted back to private.
