James C. Lunt enlisted early in 1941 or 1942. He completed 63 missions in the South Pacific before being assigned to Europe.

Eyewitness statements
Lt Barats: "One B-24 of this Group was hit by flak, broke up slightly, and crashed into the ground. 3 or 4 chutes were seen."
Lt Jordan: "One ship down, believed Lt Barneycastle. Behind #4 engine large hole and fire; #4 engine feathered, right wing broke off, and the ship spun down. Three chutes were seen at flying altitude, and three chutes seen low."
Lt Blank: "Near St. Vith, flak hit on #3 and #4 engines, rear half of the ship was on fire. Seven chutes were seen okay, 8th chute burning. The plane was observed to crash near town."

Other crews also reported seeing this plane. All reported from three to five chutes used.
