More information

1st Lt Barneycastle was originally buried as unknown x-2.

Plane was found approximately three miles south of St. Vith, Belgium. Approximately fifty yards off the highway. Last contact that the other crewmembers had with Lt Barneycastle was that he gives the orders to bail out and Barneycastle ask how bad the fire was. The crash killed him waiting for the crew to clear the plane. Lt Barneycastle placed the aircraft in a dive in hopes of extinguishing the fire. Unfortunately, the fire quickly reached the fuel tanks. The explosion ripped the plane apart and the falling debriscrashed three miles south of St. Vith, Belgium. The aircraft exploded in midair at an altitude of 24000 feet.

I happened to be the first one out of the plane and seen it exploded. After it exploded I seen two other chutes open. I later met the other two boys", is what one survivor said.
