1st Lt Calvin J. Ellis Jr. graduated from Amherst College.

He enlisted in Boston, Massachusetts on 16 May 1942.

He flew more than 35 missions.

The aircraft was hit by fighters.

According to a surviving crew member, he was last seen going through bomb bay to the waist. The Germans told the survivors the next day that he did not jump and therefore was killed when the airplane hit the ground. They have claimed to have found his body in the waist of the airplane. They showed them his wallet and dog tag.

He is remembered at the Hanover Center Cemetery in Hanover, Masschusetts.
