T/5 John W. Devenney attended high school for three years and was a policeman before he enlisted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 21 July 1943.

He was officially declared dead one year and one day after he was reported missing in action. At that time his unit was fighting in the vicinity of Trier.
