More information

1st Lt William Schnicke graduated from Hughes High School.

He was sent overseas in September 1944.

A member of Lt Schnicke's unit, Walter Lepinsky stated: I heard that Lt Schnicke got killed after he went down to a cellar and Sgt. Fields was manning a bazooka there. A German tank was coming up near the cellar and Fields went to fire on it, as I heard, Schnicke took the bazooka from Fields, but due to the movement a projectile came through the window and killed Schnicke.

He was first buried at the the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Foy, Belgium.

His brother George was taken prisoner by the Japanes on Battan and was reported missing in action on 15 December 1944 and is remembered at the Tablets of the Missing at the American Military Cemetery of Manilla.

Lt Schnicke was the father of a daughter who was born 13 days after he was killed.
