S/Sgt John J. Kelleher Jr. attended Washington State College after graduating from Ellensburg High School and worked on a farm before he enlisted in Tacoma, Washington on 14 August 1942. He was sent overseas in May 1944.

He was reported wounded in action on 20 September 1944 for which he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time.

He was killed by small arms fire in his bladder and large intestine.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Andilly, France.
