Pfc William A. Rongholt worked as a farmer before he enlisted at Fort Douglas, Utah on 23 February 1944.

He was sent overseas in December 1944. In the winter he was hospitalized for three months from frozen feet during the offensive action. He recovered from his injuries and was able to join his unit in time for the spring offensive.
