More information

S/Sgt Eldridge I. Hutto enlisted at Camp Blanding, Florida on 29 November 1942.

He was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously. The citation cited: Sgt Hutto was severally wounded by machine-gun fire. Despite his profusely bleeding wound, he completed his reconnaissance, returned to his squad and, in his determination to direct the advance of his men, refused all medical aid. In the advance, Sgt Hutto was killed by fragments from an 88 mm artillery burst, but his men, inspired by the fortitude and outstanding valor of their leader, carried on in his name and gained their objective. Sgt Hutto's determination in spite of his painful wounds and his devotion to duty reflect the greatest credit upon himself and the military service.
