Sgt Austin L. Opp attended the University of Illinois before he enlisted in Urbana, Illinois on 4 December 1942.

Sgt Opp was ambushed while on night guard duty and found dead in his foxhole. He was killed by a gunshot wound to the chest, but it could have also been a piece of shrapnel mistaken for a bullet.
