More information

Sgt Philip H. Carroll Jr. graduated from Lincoln High School and attended Reed College. He was born in Germany while his father served on the President Herbert Hoover relief administration following World War I.

He volunteered for the Army of the United States in Portland, Oregon on 14 October 1942.

He received training in Salt Lake City, Utah and Denver, Colorado.

Aircraft 43-38066 collided in midair with aircraft 43-38108, probably caused by #108 being caught in the propwash. #066 was chewed up completely. The propellers of the other airplane cut through the radio room.

Eight crew members were killed, one survived and was taken prisoner.
