S/Sgt John J. Ward volunteered for the Army Air Corps on 24 March 1944 in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania.A/C 44-40439 was flying off our right wing, straggling slightly. Three enemy aircraft attacked from my left. The aircraft caught fire, and the whole right wing was enveloped in flames.
S/Sgt Ward is remembered at St. Benedict's Catholic Cemetery in Carrollton, Cambria County, Pennsylvania with a memorial marker.
