More information

2nd Lt Maurice W. Mangis graduated from Jefferson High School and was employed at the Oregon State Highway Department.

He enlisted in Portland, Oregon on 16 March 1942.

A/C 42-37766 was downed by enemy aircraft. Both waist gunners were killed in the attack by enemy fire; 2nd Lt Mangis and the co-pilot were killed in the crash. They were last seen at their positions. It is believed they stayed with the ship until it was too late to bail out. The remaining 6 crew members were able to bail out in time. One was able to escape, the other ended up a POW.

"Lt Maurice W. Mangis, whose home is at 1940 West Nob Hill, Salem, is missing in action in the European theater of war, but there is a possibility, relatives believe, that he may be a prisoner of the Germans. It is known that some others of the bomber crew, for whom he was pilot, are prisoners of war. Lt Mangis was a crew member of the "Princess Pat", which he had named for his small daughter, but it was discovered that a sister of Sgt Dale Aldrich and the sweetheart of Sgt Anton Svoboda were also named Patricia, so really all three are honored.
