B-17 42-31658 piloted by 2nd Lt James J. Kelly, was seen to be knocked out of formation by fighters at 5225N-0730E. It was last seen spinning down at about 5000 feet but not on fire.The aircraft crashed near Herzlake, district Lingen. 2nd Lt Knox bailed out but his parachute didn“t open.
On 26 April 1944 the body of 2nd Lt William Knox was discovered in the swamps near Wettrap. Williams was initially buried at the POW-cemetery in Lingen on 27 April 1944 at 1100 hours.
