Final Honors Paid Young SoldierFRANKENMUTH, MICHIGAN, THURSDAY, JUNE 21, 1945.
St. John's Lutheran church was filled Sunday afternoon when people from far and near came to pay final tribute to Pvt Victor Auernhammer who gave his life for his country when he was killed in Belgium Dec 31, 1944.
The service included solos by Elmer Schemm "The Lord's Prayer" accompanied by Mr Hitzemann at the organ. Commander George Eischer of the American Legion presented Mrs Anna Albera with the flag. Taps were played by Ruben W Kern; at the close of the service. The American Legion Post 150 attended in a body.
Honorary pallbearers were Servicemen Howard Rogner, Peter Gerth, Wilbur Weiss, Floyd Bierlein, Richard Schluckebier, Harold Rau and Charles Vanek. A wreath was placed at the Servicemen's Honor Roll.
Pvt. Auernhammer was born Nov. 1, 1924 in Birch Run, the 20-year-old son of Mrs Anna Albera.
He was inducted into the army on April 26, 1944 and after leaving Ft. Sheridan, was sent to Camp Hood, TX., to be trained for 17 weeks. Later he was stationed at Ft. George Meade, Maryland. He left the TJ.S.A. Sept. 8, 1944, and from then until Dec was in England, France, and Belgium where he served as a postal clerk. His last letter to his mother was dated December 17. He has one brother Pfc. Chester Auernhammer serving in New Guinea. He is survived by his parents, Mr and Mrs Domonico Albera and two sisters, Mrs Chas. Butcher of Detroit and Mrs Albert Smith of Frankenmuth and one Nephew.
